Other Mother Of the Week

Laurien Russell

Laurien Russell is a brainy, beautiful woman who waited a bit before marrying and having a child, the equally brainy and beautiful 5-year-old Riley. Raised in Southern California, Laurien enjoyed a successful career in real estate before meeting her husband Greg. Laurien says, “Being an older mom, I really feel like I did a lot before I had Riley. Now I really enjoy being a stay at home mom.”

Laurien's Tips

The bottom line for me, is that routine is absolutely dependent on the parent being consistent and sometimes that's easier said than done. I think routine is kind of like a diet, if you fall off, get back on it as soon as you can.

We still use our baby monitor.  It's great during a playdate when you don't want to hover and they want to play alone in her room.

Don't assume a playdate with a child of the same sex will be easier. Riley has playdates with two different boys and they usually go more smoothly than the ones with the girls. The boys get her moving more, lots more running, jumping and climbing. Playdates two or four kids seem to work better than those with three.

And about travel, don't have any expectations of how your child should feel about a particular trip that you are eager to take. Travel can be difficult and tiring for adults, imagine how a kid feels.
